Edappadi is a city and a municipality in Salem district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Edappadi was once known for its thriving powerloom industry. The economy is diversified. The main modes of income are agriculture, Lorry transport, granite, textile powerloom, entertainment and foundry. It is third largest town in Salem Dt. next to Attur and Mattur. The rocks around the Edappadi is expected to have more number of rare minerals. The name is derived from a group of family name 'Edayar' (means the people who survived with Cow, Buffalo and house animals. Now it is an ideal place for peaceful life and harmony synchronize with nature living. The water was supplied by Cauvery river and 'Periya-yeri'(Big-lake) near Edappadi. It is surrounded by many lakes like, Periyayeri, ChettiYeri, Punka-yeri, Rettipatti-Yeri. It is an Ideal spot for Cinima shootings (Rich in Forest, riverside, Rocky landscape, Village peoples with reality.)

It is situated at the basin of the hill called 'Soorieya malai'(Mountain of Sun). The epic says, the Panja Pandavas were resided at the top of the hill during the first year of their 14 years forest living. Still this mountain doesn't have any plants due to its rocky and unusual properties. The research done by Periyar University Geologist shows it consist of rare radioactive minerals. Edappadi has a variable terrain. Sankagiri - Edappadi route via Veerappam Palayem and Sunnambukkuttai is rocky. It is really beautiful view of this town, while seen from 'Konamori'(A Bridge with dangerous Turns ) busstop via. Sankagiri - Edappadi route. River Cauvery is 6 km away from edappadi. The Government boys school is one of the olddest school in the District started in the year 1940s and it founded by Thiru. Nachiappa Gounder, an eminent personality and an excellent MLA during 1940s. It produces many Doctors, Engineers, Scientists, sportsmen, NRIs and industrialists. It has second biggest play ground and student strength in Salem Dt. Sarbanka Lake is in near to Idappadi Bus-Stand Itself. Lot of tourism places are available around 10 km.

   Located in the Salem district of the state, IDAPPADI is one of the most important textile areas. River Sarabanga, Soriyankaradu mountain which is 5 km away from the town are the major geographical features of this region.
            Spread over an area of 28.22 km2. Idappadi is one of the towns in the district of Salem. With a population of over 48804 (2001 Census), the economy of the town revolves around the manufacture of towels and lungies.

The climate in Edappadi is very hot in summer and mildly cooler climate in winter. The monsoon rain starts around October to November. May, June will be windy and summer raining season starts.

The Peoples are Vanniyar, bhakthars and Meenavar, kongu vellala gounders and other communities are scattered around. All are have a mutual understanding and broyherhood nature.

As of 2001 India census[1], Edappadi had a population of 48,804. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Edappadi has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 71%, and female literacy is 51%. In Edappadi, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

             Four major roads, namely to Salem, Jalagandapuram, Poolampatty and Bhavani pass through IDAPPADI. All these roads carry heavy traffic, leading to congestion in the city. The nearest railway station is Sankari which is 13 km away from the town.
   3. ECONOMIC BASE
   The economy of Idappadi is mainly based on Agriculture and allied acgivities, manufacturing Industry, Trade and Commerce and Household Industry.
   Agriculture and allied activities:
   According to 1991 census 30.19% of the workers in this Town are engaged in Agriculture and allied activities. Large Number of households are engaged in the cultivation of paddy, cotton , ground-nut and tobacco.
   Industries:
   As per 1991 census, 38.90% of the workers in Idappadi Town are engaged in manufacturing industries. The Idappadi Town is having rice and oil mills and other industries. The concentration of rice and oil mills are found along Poolampatti road and Sellandiamman Koil Street which is further leads to Bhavani Town.
   Household Industry:
   As per 1991 Census 2.66% of workers in Idappadi Town are engaged in Household Industries. Large number of households are engaged in power loom factories and manufacturing of cotton products and they are concentrated in the core of the Town area.
   Land and Building uses:
   The Idappadi Local Planning Area, which is the Municipal Area itself, extends over an area of 28.22 km2 of this the developed area is 295 hectares and worksout to 10.46% of the total area. The remaining 89.54% of the area remains undeveloped and comprises of lands such as land under-water, wet-lands and dry lands which includes Hillocks and vacant lands.
