Newsletter/Membership

Thanks for the note; I wasn't aware of the opt-out list. However, I think I will remain off the main member list for now. Although I am hopeful that the current state of Esperanza will retrospectively be regarded as a 'transitional' phase, it seems to me to have strayed from its original purpose, and I wish to leave quietly, without making waves. A Belief

I believe it is an unwritten law of Wikipedia that one should not interfere in another's affairs ON A TALK PAGE. If you have a problem with nonsensical edits, make sure you know my side of the story, which is Why1991 is sitting right next to me right now on his laptop. Thank you for wasting five minutes of my life. Happy New Year!FF7Freakzorz 04:39, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

In response to you, I may not be Ed but I understand this situation, it was clearly a bad faith edit and Ed warned you in interest of his friend. Edits like that are vandalism and anyone can revert them. I also sincerly doubt this user is next you, if he was, you should have said something before you made an edit which can only be interpreted as vandalism. DoomsDay349 04:42, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Re: Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Pyrospirit, please let me know when this is concluded. Sockpuppetry in votes eally can't be tolerated, as for the MFD, I came to a non-con based on there nto being a compelling consensus to delete the page (there was also none to keep), and if the CU doesn't come up with anything I'd suggest waiting a month and re mfding it if you want, rather than trying to drag through DRV (that would probally give a "send to mfd" result anyway) to let any socks die down. Thanks, — xaosflux Talk 17:09, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Response

I do not try to get into edit wars. I don't even know what an edit war is. I simply sent a message as a joke to someone who was sitting next to me in real life. As for my message to you, I was a little angry because I was just messing around. Please excuse my rude behavior, but a user deleting content from another's talk page seems inappropriate. Thank you, and sorry again, Happy New Year!FF7Freakzorz 22:02, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Just wanted to say...

Ed, I saw your farewell message on the EA page, and wanted to remind you that you're also a member of the Kindness Campaign. We're carrying out our ideals into the community - you might feel that's a better option for you. Good luck with editing, and if you ever need help, editing or otherwise, my talkpage is only a click away. Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 16:27, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Thankyou, the juice is very pretty. :) Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 22:23, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Apology, the sequel

Seems to me, as before, that we got off on the wrong foot. Anyways, my friend sent me this message and told me to pass it on, and it only felt right that you deserve it. Thanks! Happy New Year!FF7Freakzorz 17:43, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza

Hi, I took Jay's linked name out earlier, but saw you put it back in. Considering that the EA pages were regularly vandalised I thought it prudent not to mention his name and link his user pages. As the link appears very early on I thought it a magnet for those who felt strongly against Esperanza, Jay no longer edits, so even if the communication is polite, it is unlikely to get an answer. There is also the aspect that it makes it sound very much like all Jay's idea, when he himself reminds me he very quickly disagreed with aspects it was taking and was not "in charge" for very long. If, as I do, you consider these reasons for not requiring his name to be mentioned, please remove it. Thanks. --Alf melmac 01:06, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Hamedog's exit

I have no comment about it really. I think that people should try to relax a bit, myself. If having a thank you to a major matching donor causes someone to be radically unhappy to that degree, then I hope they do take some time off to assess why. It is my opinion that we should do a lot more of that sort of thing. I think that a lot of people really do not grasp, in the least, how precarious the situation of the foundation is without some major funding. People like to imagine that all of this is free, but it is not free. And there is absolutley nothing unethical about thanking major donors.

If the foundation said that they are cancelling the NPOV policy for donors, or whatever like that, then I'd be the first to object, and I would be out of here taking as many good people with me as I could. But if there's a logo on the site, and it means that we can actually start to achieve our real charitable goals, then I am all for it.

Here's the way I look at it... it is very easy for us to sit in our wealthy western countries with plenty of food, electricity, computers, and Internet access, and smugly pretend that we do not need corporate help to achieve our goals. We must look like idiots to at least some of the people we are supposed to be genuinely trying to help... people with NO access to wikipedia, people working in minor languages with NO support for co-ordinators to help them build their language wikipedia, etc. I refuse to be a "limosine liberal" myself... I want us to make a difference in the world, a HUGE difference, that goes far beyond my own preference that we avoid such things as much as possible.--Jimbo Wales 04:24, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your thoughts Jimbo.--HamedogTalk|@ 17:53, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Also Jimbo, you spelt limousine ("limosine"), absolutely ("absolutley"), canceling ("cancelling") and "coordinators" ("co-ordinators") wrong (Firefox 2.0 has a built in spell checker). But I can see where you are coming from. But I think there needs to be more communication between the board and the editors so situations like this where the community is divided on whether hosting a logo is an advertisment or acknowledgment. Perhaps, this may be a little over the top thought, a Wikipedia "Government" of 70 or so editors and admins who vote on decisions the board puts forward (and they could put in "bills" themselves). Each user is elected for an "electorate" (perhaps WikiProjects?). This would create more communication between the Users and the Board. One more thing, perhaps more information to users about up coming decisions from the board? Just some thoughts which could improve Wikipedia.--HamedogTalk|@ 19:17, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
"limosine" and "absolutley" were typos, and for that you have my unending apologies. But "cancelling" and "co-ordinators" are spelled correctly.--Jimbo Wales 17:45, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Both spellings of cancelling (canceling/cancelling) and of co-ordinators (cordinators/co-ordinators) are correct - it depends if you are using British English or American English. Anthonycfc [TC] 21:32, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, I was just going off the Firefox spell checker.--HamedogTalk|@ 03:48, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

FF7Freakzorz

Thank you for being concerned about what FF7Freakzorz said on my page. He's my friend in real life and I actually was sitting right next to him when he sent that message as we were hosting a Wikinight. I'm not mad about what he said and wouldn't have minded if it stayed there or not because he was just joking around, but what he did was still considered vandalism and there had to be a consequence. I will tell him to not post that kind of stuff on here anymore and to joke around in person and not on Wikipedia. Thanks for your concern. Why1991 05:35, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

500,000,000,000 Dinars

200px Hey, Ed. I found some dinars on the street, and decided to give it to you in hopes of a successful RfA, whenever you decide to become an admin. There's a story behind this rather large denomination. It was released in Yugoslavia on the morning of December 23, 1993. It was worth $6. By the end of that same day, it was worth $3. Sorry, you can't buy much with it :) Wishing for a successful RfA -   •The RSJ•   Talk | Sign Here 17:12, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Esperanza MfD

Ed, your comments and actions are bordering very dangerously on disrupting Wikipedia to prove a point. Please remain civil and assume good faith on the part of all involved. I understand that you may be frustrated, but it does no good to attack the motives of admins attempting to implement the closure. Try to comment about substance rather than editor involved. I don't think anyone is truly in a position to discern or attack motives behind someone else's actions. One can only assume their good faith. alphachimp 19:37, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Esperanza MFD review

Ed, Mailer put together a list of pages indicating how he wanted them closed. It's at User:Carcharoth/Esperanza MfD review/Classification. Basically, all the governance and membership should be salted and the other pages should have their history and be made protected redirects to the main esperanza page. Are you happy to withdraw the review on that basis, and I'll undertake closing it out? Steve block Talk 09:57, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

I'm still quite hesitant to withdraw the nomination due to various reasons, including the fact that no plan seems to have been formed in taking action on deleted pages that were to be "Messedrockerified" (example: [2]). You indicate in the above post that Mailer indicated his suggestions for closing the pages. I see no proof of that, although I might have looked in the wrong place. To me, it seems like there is no current suggestions on taking care of the situation.
Nonetheless, I will AGF in the current situation and post the appropriate request, although that will not be necessary since I requested the DRV on January 12. A 5 day debating period is required, so the discussion ends today, January 17. If you choose to use my withdrawal as grounds to close the debate, please make sure that I am allowed to do so. I'm not that much familiar with policy regarding debates.
I do ask of you, however, that when you close the review (or whoever the closing admin is), you attempt to provide a clear definition of what is to be done to reflect the consensus on WP:DRV/EA, not previous consensus on WP:MFD/EA. Make sure there is no room for confusion. In fact, I think it would be best if all admins attempting to close the discussion meet together on Wikipedia talk:Deletion review/Wikipedia:Esperanza in order to reach on an agreement on how to act on the review closure.--Ed ¿Cómo estás?Reviews? 02:13, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
I'll let someone else close it then. I'm not sure how you can't see that Mailer's closing comments and his classification of the pages indicates his intentions, so with respect I'm pulling out. I'm only interested in ending the argument not continuing it into fresh ground. Steve block Talk 13:11, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
  • I'll probably do the implementation single-handedly, then get (auditing) endorsement from other sysops if nessecary. That may take a while due to RL workload (it's 4am now), and I ask for your kind patience in the meantime. - Best regards, Mailer Diablo 20:42, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
