Ecthelion II

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ecthelion II is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium. He is mentioned in Return of the King as the twenty-fifth Ruling Steward of Gondor.

Ecthelion was born in T.A 2886 and succeeded his father Turgon in T.A 2953.

As explained in the early chapters and Appendices of Return of the King, Ecthelion allowed the stranger Thorongil to fight for Gondor and rout the Corsairs of Umbar. It later turned out that Thorongil was none other than Aragorn, the heir to Gondor's throne. During Ecthelion's rule, the wizard Gandalf was a welcome guest in Minas Tirith, Gondor's capital city.

Ecthelion was succeeded by his son, Denethor II in T.A 2984.

Ecthelion also built many new defences along the Anduin and in Ithilien. It was possibly during his rule that the Rammas Echor was built.
