ECOMIL was the ECOWAS Mission In Liberia, a hastily assembled force of 1000 Nigerian troops airlifted into Liberia on August 15, 2003 to prevent the rebels from over running that capital city and committing revenge inspired war crimes. Some of the ECOMIL troops were subsequently withdrawn and at least two battalions incorporated into the 15,000 strong UNMIL United Nations Mission in Liberia peace keeping force.
