[edit] Easter Seals Camp Horizon

Outdoor Recreation and Education for People of All Abilities.

Easter Seals Camp Horizon(ESCH) is southern Alberta’s principal provider of outdoor recreation programs for children and adults with special needs. ESCH is a program of Alberta Easter Seals Society, a registered charity and non-profit society providing critical services to both adults and children with disabilities and serious illnesses. ESCH was established in 1965 by the Kinsmen Club of Calgary and other local service clubs. In its 42 year history over a hundred thousand Albertans of all abilities have enjoyed the life changing experiences camp offers. While at Camp, campers overcome the daily challenges of outdoor activities and succeed in doing things they never imagined possible.

Specialized programming is developed for each week of camp; including residential summer camp programs; leadership education programs; and therapeutic recreation retreats and respites.

The specialized programs and 66 acre scenic facility offers: wheelchair accessible ropes challenge course, high and low ropes challenge courses, climbing and traverse walls, 40 ft. giant swing, white water rafting, accessible pool, volleyball and basketball courts, tipi living, playing fields and hiking trails, environmental arts and archery.

In the summer months, ESCH offers five-day residential therapeutic recreation camps for children (87%) and adults (13%) with special needs. ESCH is the only facility in Alberta that offers camp programs that are dedicated entirely to the requirements of a specific special needs group each week. Most of the programs and equipment are unique to the province and the Ostomy Camp is the only one of its kind in Canada. Some of the groups ESCH provides speacialized camping programs for include:

· Kids Cancer Care Foundation · Canadian Diabetes Association · The Alberta Children’s Hospital Nephrology Clinic · The Stollery Children’s Hospital Nephrology Clinic · Calgary Cerebral Palsy Association · Canadian Ostomy Youth Camps · Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta · The PREP Program · Scouts Canada – Chinook Regional Council · Calgary Board of Education

During the non-summer months, ESCH operates as an approved field trip destination for the Calgary Board of Education as well as a team-building facility for corporate retreats.
