London Overground will operate its new 378's over three lines around London:
- North London Line Richmond station - Stratford station
- West London Line Clapham Junction station - Harrow and Wealdstone station
- East London Line Crystal Palace via West Croydon - Highbury & Islington station
The fourth major route it is responsible for the Gospel Oak to Barking Line (GOBLIN) which is not electrified. For this, London Overground is obtaining new lightweight Turbostar trains.
East London line is closed for major line extension work to become part of the London Overground network. The line is expected to begin in June 2010 with the new Electrostar trains calling at all stations from Dalston Junction to West Croydon.

[edit] New upgrades
- Bank and Monument: Until summer 2009, there is no interchange at Bank and Monument stations except between the DLR and the Northern Line. This is due to major escalator replacement works. Please use alternative interchange stations. If you travel to the Bank and Monument areas you may find it easier to use nearby alternative stations such as Cannon Street, London Bridge, Mansion House and Moorgate. Local bus services 21, 43, 133 and 141 operate between London Bridge and Moorgate stations calling at Bank and Monument. PLEASE NOTE: During morning and evening peaks some Central and/or Northern Line trains may not stop at Bank in order to prevent overcrowding.
- Borough: Reduced lift service at Borough until late September for lift refurbishment work. On Mondays to Fridays between 08.00am - 10.00am and 17.00pm - 19.00pm the station will operate as exit only with no ticket issuing facilities. Please use nearby London Bridge tube station or Elephant & Castle tube station instead. Local bus Routes 35, 40, 133 and 343 operate between all three stations and valid LU tickets will be accepted.
- Canada Water: From Monday May 5, 2008 until March 2010, one of the three exits will be closed to enable construction of a new library. Please use the other exits.
- Covent Garden: From Sunday June 1 until May 2009, major station refurbishment works will be taking place. The station will remain fully open until Saturday July 12, but between Sunday July 13 and Thursday November 27, and again from Monday January 19 until May 2009, the station will open at 08.00am on Sunday to Thursday, and will close at 23.30pm on Sunday to Wednesday. At these times, customers are advised to use Leicester Square, Holborn or Charing Cross stations instead.
- Heathrow T123: A reduced escalator service until late June 2009.
- Shepherd's Bush tube station (Central Line): Is currently being refurbished, the work will take until October, 2008.
- On the Hammersmith & City Line, there will be a radical change in the West End as there will be 2 fully refurbished and newly-built Tube Station's, Shepherd's Bush tube station and Wood Lane tube station. There will be a radical change for the Metropolitan Line also, where Ascot Road tube station and Watford West tube station will be built if the Croxley Rail Link opens.
- The Piccadilly Line on March 27, 2008 Heathrow Terminal 5 station officially opened where passengers from British Airways flights will have instant access to Central London and in to neighbouring communities. Heathrow T5 will be the same as T123 & T4 but run by Heathrow Airport staff.
- The District Line now have all interim refurbished trains (D78 Stock). At the time of refurbishing, the trains take about 15 days to strip out the old and in with the new Dot.Matrix Passenger Reader installed with CCTV inside the box along with Disability Priority areas and new flooring. These trains are fitted with GPS and a Odometer to measure where exactly a train is on the network or a tunnel. The Single-Leaf doors are still the same as painted in the London Underground Livery. The D78 Stock trains will be replaced in 2015.
- On the Jubilee Line, the whole line from Stanmore to Stratford will have SelTrac installed in 2009. The same treatment is happening to the Northern Line in 2011 after the completion of the Jubilee Line.
- On the Victoria Line by 2009, the line will undergo a dramatic change with new 2009 Stock and the 1967 Stock trains will be withdrawn from service.
- From the time of 2011, the Circle Line will be merged into the Hammersmith & City Line to form a spiral route around London terminating at Edgware Road tube station.
- From 2009 to 2015, in order of when the oldest trains will be replaced first, Metropolitan Line, Circle Line, Hammersmith & City Line and the District Line.
- At the present time due to planned engineering works disrupting the weekends, trains are delayed by several minutes at a time, but when the new trains are installed with new signalling, this will increase the amount per hour to 34, where as 2008 at the time is 28, increasing passenger safety and less overcrowding on platforms such as Victoria tube station at 8.30am.
- On the Northern Line, Camden Town tube station will eventually be totally rebuilt. In North London, Edgware, Mill Hill East and High Barnet will also be terminating stations back towards Central London. As South London has station's head towards Kennington as a terminus, passengers must terminate and walk through to the other southbound platform where they can carry on with their tube journey. If coming from King's Cross St. Pancras tube station or Old Street tube station, on the Bank Branch of the Northern Line this does not apply.
- To form the Metropolitan Line to it's full potential, the line will re-extend to Barking tube station overtaking the Hammersmith & City Line which will cover the Circle Line.
[edit] Metropolitan Police Stop & Account or Stop & Search
As of January 2008, the Metropolitan Police now have the power to stop people in the street who are taking photographs of key locations or any part of the London Underground. In the way where the police can stop you is if you are holding something at the time or behaving suspiciously. Say for instance you took a photo of Hammersmith tube station at the time, you are therefore have possibly just committed a crime as the Metropolitan Police explain gathering possible articles or other uses in the interests of terrorists. If you stop and searched, the police officer will ask you what is your interest in the subject and the location of where the incident has taken place. The interest of subjects in London is the City of Westminster and Hammersmith. The officer will take and write down your details in a statement, therefore you must sign it and also they remind you of the offence you have committed such as the Section 44 under the Terrorism Act 2000. Your details will then be recorded onto the database in the Police National Computer. Then you are able to leave the scene where you have been questioned. Therefore no further action will be taken.
I recently was in Bow Road tube station taking a few photographs of the trains passing through the station, as well as a photo of the platform, i was apprehended by British Transport Police and the Metropolitan Police. The police asked what i was doing, i told them it was for a project i was doing back home, the police detained me in the Office of the station in handcuffs and alerted SO15 Counter-Terrorism Command. They also stopped and search me, my bag and my mobile phone, my wallet and also asked if i have been in trouble with the police before. In the office, i was handcuffed in a chair surrounded by 14 Police Officers. When the plain-clothes police officers finished with the Anti-Terrorist Incident report, they let me go after 1 hour 20 minutes. The police mentioned that the information giving was recorded and filed onto the Police National Computer and passed onto Special Branch and the Security Services MI5. My advice to anyone who reads this comment, that photographing on the Underground is NOT a good idea no matter what you do. From March 28, 2008 myself will not be doing anymore.
