[edit] Baselious Geevarghese II

The article Baselious Geevarghese II is both unwikified and is copied from: [1]it even includes the "signature" 'Compiled for LOL By: Editor Dr. Rajan Mathew Philadelphia, USA' Now the Light of Life webpage does not contain any copyright statement - that I can find - so I'm reluctant to add yet another copyvio tag.

Could someone with a deeper knowledge of Eastern Christianity take appropriate action? Thank you --Cje 16:54, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

Reworked it a little bit.--equitor 17:41, August 24, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Archbishop of Edmonton and Western Canada - article needs expansion

The article entitled Archbishop of Edmonton and Western Canada needs some expansion and wikification. At present it reads:

"List of Ecumenical Patriarchate Ukrainian Orthodox Archbishops of Edmonton and Western Canada:

His Eminence John (1990-present)"

I tried some internet searching to see if I could find the information to expand it. Instead I found an apparent contradiction to this article. On the website http://www.allsaintsorthodox.net/ I found:

His Beatitude, Metropolitan Archbishop Yaroslaw announced the establishment of an Eparchy for Western Canada on Sunday, September 22, 2002. Before all the faithful gathered for the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, the Parish Board President of All Saints Orthodox Church, Mr. William Popowich read the Ecclesiastical Declaration issued by the Holy Synod. To the joyful suprise of the faithful - who had anticipated the presentation of the Priest's Miter to Archpriest & Pastor, Very Reverend Joseph Royer - the Declaration did not only established a new Eparchy. As the decision of the Holy Synod was announced more glad tidings were brought on this day of celebration. The designated Bishop-Elect for the new Western Eparchy was declared to be Mitered Archpriest, Very Rev. Joseph Royer, Pastor of All Saints Orthodox Church. By this very act and affirmation, the Parish of All Saints was elevated to Cathedral status.

This was confirmed by the website http://www.orthodoxchurchofcanada.org/OurHierarchsBishops/

PRIMATE OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH OF CANADA His Beatitude, Metropolitan Archbishop +Joseph DD,BCL,BA,BTh Archeparchy of Edmonton & All Western Canada & North American Missions -Eastern Rite 5824 - 118 Avenue, Edmonton, AB CANADA T5W 1E4 Telephone: (780) 471-2781 Primatial Residence & Chancery: (780) 479-5826 E-mail: occ1@telus.net or primate@allsaintsorthodox.net Orthodox Church of Canada Web Site: www.orthodoxchurchofcanada.org Archeparchial Web Site: www.allsaintsorthodox.net

So apparently different date for when the archbishopric was first created and different first name for the archbishop.

Clarification (either here) or in the article would be much appreciated.

Thanks

[edit] A problem with the Icon article

Dear friends! Maybe everyone know it, but for me it's a surprize. The article Icon is under a constant attack of some Protestant anonymus, who doesn't want just to tell what he thinks, but also to delete everything that Eastern Orthodox people think about icons. And only one person currently opposes him, without much success. Can you help (somehow)? Actually I have no idea how to help in such a situation. This Anonymus has really a lot of time to spend on torturing this article, I have 100 times less. My edition towards neutrality was deleted by him in several minutes. Please, help, or just give me and User:Wesley a good advice what we can to do to make the article a little bit more Wikipedian. Thank you in advance. Arseni 21:09, 8 September 2005 (UTC)

You'll have to keep your eye out for him. He's a notorious anti-Orthodox hack who's popped up under the moniker "Learner" in the alt.religion.christian.east-orthodox list and as "Magister" in the Beliefnet Eastern Orthodox forums. It's the exact same polemics and talking points unloaded over and over again. By the way, he was once a Calvary Chapel member but is no longer. From what I can tell by his posts over the last year, he's not a Christian anymore but for whatever reason he's on a crusade against Orthodox Christians, not to mention he seems to have a dislike of Slavic people. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 208.24.179.29 (talkcontribs) 19:14, 26 September 2005 (UTC).

[edit] Suggested merger

  • Totally against—Eastern Christianity is a broad enough topic in its own right that it shouldn't be subsumed into the more generic Religion portal. ——Preost talk contribs 21:38, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
  • Totally against, Eastern Christianity is a broad enough topic ... OK with ASDamick. Why not merge Portal Ukraine with Europe, India with Asia, Why not only ONE portal : Wikipedia ? Akarige 10:27, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
  • Makes no sense. Ditto ASDamick and Akarige. Philip 03:13, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
Yes, Eastern Christianity is a broad topic, but what does a portal give the general reader that the article about it doesn't? I find it very unlikely that someone would think "I wonder what articles Wikipedia has about Eastern Christianity" but I find it much more likely that someone might wonder about general religion coverage. The more portals there are, the less value each individual one has and the less likely a reader is to find what they want when looking at the already overcrowded Template:Portals box. This is why I would like to see general portals with lots of people maintaining and visiting them instead of very narrow portals maintained by a few and visited by few. Worldtraveller 16:34, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
  • Actually, given that more and more people are coming to understand that "Eastern Christianity" is in many ways very distinct from the "Western Christianity" of Roman Catholicism, Anglicanism, and Protestantism, I suspect that many would, in fact, ask such a question. --Midnite Critic 02:48, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
    • Why does the article Eastern Christianity not suffice? Worldtraveller 02:52, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
Because Eastern Christianity is not a portal to multiple links. The idea of a portal is entirely different from the idea of an article. ——Preost talk contribs 12:05, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Religion portals

I've noticed you've created quite a plethora of religion-based portals. In accordance with the conventions currently being discussed at WPT:P, I would like you to confirm that you intend to maintain all of these portals (I believe at least 6 are accredited to you at present), and that you intend to improve them in order to bring them up to the standard that is requested and required in order to maintain their presence in the namespace. While major religions are fairly high-volume and require suitable portals, several of the recent ones you have made are fairly irrelevant and definitely not high volume. While you have clearly put work into their creation, I feel obliged to let you know that several are liable to be removed from the namespace unless they demonstrate their necessity through extensive links either by articles or through the category system.

Finally, I must also point out that most of your portals are not listed at either WP:P or Portal:Browse, both of which are requirements stated at WP:P. Please feel free to contact me should you wish to discuss these matters further.

All the best, Deano 18:04, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Religion Portals

Someone said that he will delete the religious portals I set up if I don't do this and that. Will you please update the religious portals to confirm to whatever standards. Also, please help maintain the portals. Any advice, suggestions, etc are appreciated. Maybe I shouldn't have wasted my time with creating the portals. While creating the portals, I ensured that all information was accurate. These are the religious portals I established. -> Islam · Buddhism · Hinduism · Sikhism · Bahá'í Faith · Jainism · Shinto · Confucianism · Taoism · Zoroastrianism --JuanMuslim 1m 21:20, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Orthodox temple

We have the stub Orthodox temple and Eastern_Orthodox_Church#Art_and_architecture. Though the cross-shaped churches are just one (Ok, actually two - the plain and the cross-shaped with dome gr:τρούλος) of many different architectural church designs, perhaps the stub should be merge+redir? Is the english term "orthodox temple" correct for a cross-shaped (gr:σταυροειδής) church? talk to +MATIA 07:54, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

The proper Enlgish terms are "Cruciform" (cross-shaped), and "tripartite" (three-roomed) as far as I know. Kevlar67 01:28, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fanar

Would it be possible to get a team of contributors and editors to work together on crafting a larger article on Fanar, the seat of the Ecumenical Patriarch in Istanbul. I would be happy to assist as well. There should be sections on: I) History II) Important Buildings and Structures III) Neighborhood Demographics, etc. It would make for a wonderful featured article. --Caponer 17:47, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Title page missing UOCC

Your title page for this portal doesn't list the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, which has a sperate history from any of the chruches in Ukraine, amongst the list of Orthodox Churches. Perhaps it should be? Kevlar67 01:16, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Last revert

Also, I disagree with the last revert, since while the churches of Western Orthodoxy are not "eastern" in the sense of using the Eastern Rite, their history in a unique product of the Eastern Church. Similarily, no one would deny that Eastern Rite Catholics are Catholic, despite using the same liturgy as the Orthodox chruch. Beides which WP isn't for deciding you is "in" or "out" of a certain group, but providing as much info as possible to visitors. Kevlar67 01:55, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] new template

Stemming from a recent discussion I had (with myself) over at Template talk:Eastern Christianity, I ended up making a rough draft of a new template: Template talk:Eastern Christianity/rework, but it seems a little long. Anyone, please feel free to edit it or comment on it here. Is this useful to the project?--Andrew c 02:13, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject begun

A WikiProject has been formed for articles pertaining to the Eastern Orthodox Church. You've probably noticed links to it put up in various places. As of now, its organization is very much up for consensus, and a basic skeleton has been put in place. Please come help form the WikiProject so that articles on the Church may be of higher quality. You can see existing well-organized projects on similar subjects here: WikiProject Anglicanism, WikiProject Catholicism.

Take a look at WikiProject Eastern Orthodoxy, and if you choose to join the project, please add your name to the list of members and consider placing {{User WikiProject Eastern Orthodoxy}} on your userpage.

[edit] Link disambiguation

In the "Churches" list, the link [[Eastern Rite|Eastern Catholic Churches]] leads to a disambiguation page. Would someone please update it to be [[Eastern Rite Catholic Churches|Eastern Catholic Churches]]? Thanks! Chonak 20:46, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
