Description

A Chinese Han Dynasty (202 BC - 220 AD) basket dated to the 2nd century AD, unearthed at the ancient site of Lolang at what was once a Han Chinese commandery, now part of North Korea. This lacquered wooden basket provides great detail of Han figure painting. The three inch figures that adorn the basket are labeled and represent famous figures from Chinese history. During the Han Dynasty, representations of famous figures from history played a much larger role in artwork than in earlier periods. Also significant to note is the three inch figures sitting on the floor instead of sitting in chairs, the latter of which were not yet introduced to China until a few centuries later.

This artifact can now be found in the Central History Museum of Pyongyang, as well as Art Resource, NY.
