Squalus sp. B |
The eastern highfin spurdog, Squalus sp. B, is a dogfish which is yet to be formally described. It is a member of the family Squalidae, found on the continental shelf off Queensland, Australia, at depths of between 220 and 510 m. The length of the longest specimen measured is 65 cm.
The rare eastern highfin spurdog is very similar to the bartail spurdog, Squalus sp. A. It has a smaller medial barbel on the anterior nasal flaps, shorter first dorsal and caudal fins, thicker second dorsal fin spine, and no dark marks on the caudal fin. Its distribution is further south than the bartail spurdog. The pectoral fins are broadly triangulat with only slightly concave posterior margins.
Coloration is greyish-brown above, white below, with no white spots. The dorsal fins have dusky tips and edges, and the caudal fin posterior margin is light.
Its reproduction is ovoviviparous.
