[edit] General
The university was established in 1979 as a higher-education institution of technology for Turkish Cypriots. In 1986, it was converted to a state-trust-run university. The campus is located 10 km from the city of Famagusta. [1]
The university has 50 departments (7 Faculties and 3 Schools) offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, as well as a research infrastructure. The medium of instruction is entirely in English [2]. Academic Programs of EMU are broad and include Physical and Social Sciences with considerable research studies via Research Advisory Board. The university's noticeably high-standard departments are Physics, Engineering (Mechanical and Electronics), Music, History, English Literature and Humanities, Archaeology and Art History.
Currently the school enrolls approximately 15,000 students from at least 68 countries and academic staff from at least 38 countries [3].
[edit] History and Status
The university's initial establishment was called Institute of Technology, for that reason traditionally Engineering fields considered as its founding departments. But after University's fast expansion in the 90s, social sciences and arts are also becoming quite strong in their own right. Specially Music [4], English Literature, Communications and International Relations [5] perform very well.
Departments of Mechanical [6] and Electronics/Electrical Engineering [7] have been evaluated by ABET. It is one of the few departments given substantial recognition in its education level that is similar to an American University [8]. Also Civil, Industrial and Computer Engineering departments have achieved high level of standards and their graduates can advanced in both academia and industry.
University is a full member of European University Association [9] and International Association of Universities. Even though, due to Cyprus dispute, university is established its accreditation for Turkish students under Turkish Higher Education council [10] and Turkish Cypriot higher education organisation, but retains its independent structure via its non-profit foundation (in Turkish [11]). Many of the leading institutions around the world, accepts its granted degrees as it is, depending upon the department and the curriculum. Many of the graduates have gone on to graduate study in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Germany.
[edit] Library
The university library [12] is one the largest on the island, collection reached more than 120,000 books, and offers free access to hundreds of information databases and sources to the users.
The library also provides interlibrary loan system thus making it easy for research activities. Collections on Physical Sciences considerably sufficient for undergraduates and beginning post-graduates.
The strong areas of material, library owns, can be counted as follows: Considerable collection on Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, English Literature, basic related Engineering literature and small amount of Theoretical Physics. Engineering sections divided into specialized areas of relevant existing departments in the university. Sections on international relations, communication studies, philosophy and law are expanding rapidly compare to initial established materials.
Visual and reference materials sections are separate and served in the 2nd floor. Also, university keeps collection of all postgraduate works as a special collection in the library as well.
Large lecture hall in the entrance is utilized for conferences and special events. It is usual to see music recitals there, too. Classical Music listening room has been active since 1998, and its collection increasing.
There are European and American corners in the library. Those corners contain material about history and people of America. European corner mostly presents information about EU and its structure.
[edit] Sports and Social Life
The expansion of the University during the 90s was not only building and pure educational oriented. It has given an important investment on sports facilities and social activities. University owns an indoor sports complex (basketball, volleyball,.. etc), a small stadium (which is the home of American Football, Soccer), tennis fields.
Annual Spring Festival [13] has been introduced in 1993. It is one of the biggest festivals in North Cyprus alongside the Famagusta Festival. Spring Festival gathers in one peaceful festival all the different ethnic communities in EMU, which covers many origins from Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia.
University owns a radio station on 106.5 FM called Radio EMU [14], broadcasting to whole island [15]. It is run by students of Communications Faculty.
