[edit] History
Eastar Jet is a new consumer airline in its formative stages. It's being organized to take advantage of a specific gap in the short-haul domestic travel market. The gap exists in low cost services out of Seoul, , Ulsan, Jeju, Cheongju and Gunsan.
The gap in the availability of low cost service in and out of the Seoul (Gimpo International) hub coupled with the demand for passenger travel on selected routes from Seoul indicates that a new entrant airline could be expected to capture a significant portion of current air travel business at that hub.
EastarJet was founded Oct. 2007 in Seoul, and the expected inaugural date is Aug. 2008. The main share hoder of Eastar Jet is the Eastar group in South Korea.
Over the years, the management of Eastar Jet has carefully and regularly monitored the air transport industry to understand market trends and to identify future needs. Airline industry in Korean is not an exception from this global demand.
However, LCC in the Korean market is yet to come: Two legacy (Korean Air and Asiana Airlines) and two regional airlines (Jeju Air and Hansung Airlines). Eastar Jet will be the first true LCC entering Korean market
[edit] New routes
- Daily services between Jeju (RKPC) and Gunsan (RKJK), Seoul (RKSS) begin in August, 2008.
[edit] Future plans
The airline is planning to fly to Southeast Asia, as well as other destinations in China and Japan.
Eastar Jet's Gunsan hub is one of the airports in Asia being considered a secondary hub for a Southern Asian affliate, Eastar Jet for one-stop flights to Southeast Asia.
[edit] Fleet
In 2008, the Eastar Jet fleet will include the following aircraft:
Aircraft | Total | Passengers (Economy) |
Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Boeing 737-700 | 2 (Lease) | 137 | Winglets |
Boeing 737-800 | 3 Will be Order | 172 |
Eastar Jet chose a single aircraft type fleet which allows for greater efficiency in maintenance and support of the low-cost structure.
And when it came to selecting this single aircraft fleet Eastar Jet has opted for new generation Boeing 737-700/800 with winglet, taking a cue from the successful single operating type model pioneered by Air Asia.
These 172 seater aircraft will allow for safe, comfortable and efficient flying and are ideally suited for short to medium haul flights in Korean conditions.
The first deliveries of 737-700 aircraft began in March 2008, and by May 2008 the second 737 NG aircraft will be delivered. Eastar Jet's future aircraft orders consist of B737-700 and 737-800 models. The airline plans to have a fleet of 15 aircraft by the end of 2013.
