East Tyrol, or East Tirol, is an exclave of the Austrian state of Tyrol, sharing no border with North Tyrol, the main part of the state. The reason for East Tyrol's situation is the fact that Austria had to cede Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol to Italy according to the Treaty of Saint Germain following World War I. In Austria, East Tyrol borders Carinthia and Salzburg, while it also shares borders with the Italian provinces of Bolzano-Bozen (Region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol) and Belluno (Region of Veneto). Its capital is Lienz. The district (Bezirk) of Lienz is the only one in East Tyrol.
