[edit] History

The East Smithfield Public consists of two former libraries sponsored by a local mill. These libraries are the Bernon Public Library and the Esmond Free Public Library. In 1872, the Bernon Public Library was founded by the Bernon Manufacturing Company, while in 1916, Esmond Mills, a textile plant, contributed the materials needed to build the Esmond library. Half a century later, in 1967, the Boards of Trustees of the two libraries determined to merge the two libraries into one library under one board to be called the East Smithfield Public Library. Subsequently, in 1985, they moved to their current location at the former Dorothy T.P. Dame School. Today, a non-profit corporation with a Board of Trustees governs the library.[1]
