East Montpelier is a town in Washington County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,578 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 32.1 square miles (83.1 km²), of which, 32.0 square miles (82.9 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (0.34%) is water.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,578 people, 1,007 households, and 730 families residing in the town. The population density was 80.6 people per square mile (31.1/km²). There were 1,055 housing units at an average density of 33.0/sq mi (12.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.39% White, 0.78% African American, 0.70% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 1.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.12% of the population.

There were 1,007 households out of which 31.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.7% were couples living together and joined in either marriage or civil union, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% were non-families. 20.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the town the population is distributed with 24.3% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 32.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $46,469, and the median income for a family was $53,922. Males had a median income of $36,023 versus $26,216 for females. The per capita income for the town was $22,425. About 2.3% of families and 3.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.6% of those under age 18 and 5.0% of those age 65 or over.
