East Hunsbury

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

East Hunsbury is a large housing estate in the south of the town of Northampton, two miles from the town centre. It is part of the Hunsbury area, which also constitutes West Hunsbury as well. Shelfleys is the original name for the area of Northampton currently referred to as West Hunsbury which is also part of the Borough of Northampton. The name of West Hunsbury still appears on maps for the district as Shelfleys. Merefield is the corresponding name for East Hunsbury, together with the name 'Blackymore' for the eastern part of East Hunsbury. All three names are still on local direction signs in Northampton as at 2007 although all three are no longer in use by the local people living there.

At Mereway to the north is a large Tesco Extra Supermarket, Public Library, Roman Catholic and non-denominational churches, pub and public sports centre. There are two primary schools in the area and Collingtree Park Golf Course is accessible from Rowtree Road and exists in Windingbrooke Lane.

It also has two central retail parks, the first consisting of:

  • Tesco Express
  • Takeaway Fish and Chip shop
  • Florist (formerly a video hire shop)
  • Chemist
  • Hair Salon
  • The Collingtree (public house)
  • Community Centre

And the second, known as Merefield, contains:

  • A large Tesco 'Extra' supermarket open 24 hours (except Sunday, when it's open 10.00 to 16.00) and petrol station
  • A Subway restaurant
  • An estate agent (O'Riordan Bond)
  • 'Chillies', a licensed Indian restaurant/take-away
  • 'Serenity', another licensed bar

There are two Primary Schools in the area. The area is in the catchment of Mereway Community College Secondary School located on the north side of Mere Way dual carriageway which is also a performing arts college. It has recently seen the construction of an whole new school. It now has excellent facillites and is continuing to improove.

East Hunsbury is also home to the Grangewood Park Residents Club, a leisure complex converted from grade II listed farm buildings for the exclusive use of 265 homeowners on the Grangewood Estate (located within 'Merefield' - see above) and their invited guests. The leisure complex includes two licensed bar areas, tennis & squash courts.
