East Hills is an intermediate terminus on the East Hills line, at East Hills in the south-western suburbs of Sydney, Australia. It was the original terminus of the line, hence the line bears its name. However, the Clearways Project is building a new turnback at Revesby which will substantially reduce East Hills' role as a turnback.

[edit] History

The station opened in the 1930s as the terminus of the East Hills line. It had a brick building on an island platform in the style of other stations on the East Hills line[1]. The line was single track from Riverwood and unelectrified at opening. Electrification followed, then the station was completely rebuilt and slightly relocated in 1987 when the line was extended from East Hills to the Main South Line at Glenfield. East Hills has two through tracks (platforms 2 and 3) and a side terminating track (platform 1). In total, there is one island platform (platforms 1 and 2) and one side platform (platform 3). The current station is of modern concrete and steel construction, with a ramps down from platform level to the entrance and booking office below.

[edit] Platforms/Service

The station currently is the terminus of the 'local' all stations service to and from the city. This frequency is 4 trains per hour during weekday daytimes and 2 trains per hour at nights and weekends/holidays[2]. East Hills is also served by limited stops services to and from Campbelltown, and the island platform facilitates interchange for city bound travellers from the limited stops services to the local services. The role of East Hills station is anticipated to change in 2008 upon the completion of part of the Clearways project, when a new terminus for local services is to be constructed two stations closer to the city at Revesby[3]. It is expected that local services will terminate mainly at Revesby, leaving the terminating platform at East Hills to be used occasionally or in emergencies. A disadvantage of the current layout at East Hills is that trains arriving in the turnback platform obstruct Sydney bound trains from Campbelltown, as terminating trains must cross over the 'up' (towards Sydney) track to reach the terminating platform.
