East Herts Miniature Railway

The East Herts Miniature Railway (EHMR) is situated behind Van Hages Garden Centre in Great Amwell near Ware, Hertfordshire. Opened in 1978. It had carried 1 million passengers by 2006. It is open Saturdays 11:00-17:00 and Sundays & Public Holidays 11:00-16:30. Its primary purpose is to give train rides mainly steam-hauled to the general public on a 7 1/4 in gauge track. £25,000 has been donated to Amwell View School from the EHMR. Current length is around 1/4 of a mile, journey time is 3.5 minutes. There are 3 steam locos ("J.C.B. Miller" & "Peter Brown" both 0-4-2 Tinkerbell class locos & "Ellan Bee" a 2-4-2 ) & 2 petrol locos ("H.G. Harrison" an 0-4-0 + tender sit on loco & "John Patton" a 2-6-2 sit in loco) belonging to the company which are in regular use. The site comprises of a station with canopy and booking office, bridge, tunnel, turntable, signal box (ex London Underground at Hyde Park Corner on the Piccadilly Line), steaming bays, level crossing and workshop. Colour light signals and electro-pneumatic points are in operation on special event days.
