East Hampshire is a county constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. It was created in 1983 to replace the Petersfield Parliamentary constituency. The sitting member of Parliament, and indeed the only MP the seat has had, is Michael Mates. He is retiring at the next General Election.

[edit] Boundaries
The constituency is based in a similar area to that of the East Hampshire district, however, the constituency covers a smaller area. The constituency includes the towns of Petersfield, part of Waterlooville, Horndean and Alton. After 2005 the constituency will cover a smaller area than before, as Horndean and the surrounding area becomes part of the new Meon Valley constituency. The constituency will gain the southernmost part of what is currently North East Hampshire.
