(31.092408, -87.053174)According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.5 square miles (9.1 km²), of which, 3.5 square miles (9.1 km²) of it is land and 0.28% is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 2,496 people, 1,043 households, and 688 families residing in the city. The population density was 712.3 people per square mile (275.3/km²). There were 1,249 housing units at an average density of 356.4/sq mi (137.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 80.29% White, 17.07% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.44% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 1.96% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,043 households out of which 31.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% were non-families. 29.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city the population was spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 88.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $23,125, and the median income for a family was $30,610. Males had a median income of $26,281 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,531. About 18.5% of families and 23.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 36.7% of those under age 18 and 22.0% of those age 65 or over.
