East Aceh Regency

East Aceh Regency (Indonesian: Kabupaten Aceh Timur) is a regency in eastern Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam. This regency is rich in petroleum other than North Aceh and Aceh Tamiang regencies. This regency is also base for Gerakan Aceh Merdeka before Military Emergency in May 2003. Before Military Emergency, this regency is a black region, mainly in Peureulak and its environ.
Although being unstable yet, the condition of East Aceh begins recovered.

Since 2000, East Aceh has been divided to distribute development.

The inhabitant of East Aceh comprises various tribes, predominantly Acehnese, followed by Gayo concentrated in Serbajadi and Gayo Lues Regency. Melayu Tamiang may also be found in Aceh Tamiang, also Javanese in transmigrational region.
