It is my understanding that Richard Jones was paymaster to the Forces, where allegedly he embezzeled large sums of money. Some of this was spent on the creation of Ranelagh gardens in Chelsea, and some on the founding in 1706 of a school for six poor boys and six poor girls. This school subsequently became a grammar school, but after the overhaul of the education system in the 1980's is now a comprehensive.
