Talk:Earl of Newport

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The barony was created with a special precedence ahead of some more senior barons, a not uncommon practice at the time and before, the Lords refused this and the King created him an earl at least in part to frustrate this decision. I don't have a citation to hand if anyone else does. Alci12 17:17, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Cracroft's says: 5 Jun 1627 Baron Mountjoy, of Thurveston in the County of Derby, with precedency over all Barons created since 20 May 1627 (this special clause of precedency was rejected by the House of Lords in 1628). Proteus (Talk) 10:02, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
