The title of Earl of Peterborough was created in the Peerage of England in 1628. The third earl was created Earl of Monmouth as well in 1689, some time before he inherited the Peterborough title from his father in 1697. The Earls also bore the subsidiary title of Baron Mordaunt, created May 4, 1529.
