[edit] Archive1

Hello, I wonder what this empty heading is doing at the top? If you want to archive some of this long page, see Wp:archive. Hope this helps!

Thanks for improving the Patrick page today, BTW. - Fayenatic (talk) 13:47, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome!

Hi EamonnPKeane, and a warm welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you have enjoyed editing as much as I did so far and decide to stay. Unfamiliar with the features and workings of Wikipedia? Don't fret! Be Bold! Here's some good links for your reference and that'll get you started in no time!

Most Wikipedians would prefer to just work on articles of their own interest. But if you have some free time to spare, here are some open tasks that you may want to help out :

  • RC Patrol - Keeping a lookout for vandalism.
  • Cleanup - Help make unreadable articles readable.
  • Requests - Wanted on WP, but hasn't been created.
  • Merge - Combining duplicate articles into one.
  • Wikiprojects - So many to join, so many to choose from...Take your pick!

Oh yes, don't forget to sign when you write on talk pages, simply type four tildes, like this: ~~~~. This will automatically add your name and the time after your comments. And finally, if you have any questions or doubts, don't hesitate to contact me on my talk page. Once again, welcome! =)

Did you get permission from Maddox to post this image? Maddox.GIF WhisperToMe 15:03, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

No but I assumed it wouldn't be copyright EamonnPKeane 16:41, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Unfortunately, that's not the way it works. Most works are automatically copyrighted. We need explict permission before we can use most images. Please see Copyright and Wikipedia:Copyrights before uploading any more images. I think your heart is in the right place, it's just we have to make sure Wikipedia complies with the law. [edit] Sing A Song Of Sixpence

According to the Snopes page you referenced in your addition to Blackbeard, Sing A Song Of Sixpence was indeed a coded pirate recruitment message. However your addition states that it is not. Which is correct? Snopes lists four references, so I would assume they are correct. Thanks. --Dan East 19:35, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

It was actually a joke by Snopes: 1 EamonnPKeane 18:08, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

  • Okay, that's for clarifying that. The problem is the page you reference appears authoritative and does not clearly indicate that it is a farce. I modified the article to be a bit more clear about that. --Dan East 19:54, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
There is a clear link now on the Snopes page clarifying that everything on the lost legends pages is a hoax intended to demonstrate people's gullibilty

[edit] Unc.jpg

Despite the deletion warning above, Image:Unc.JPG hasn't been deleted. Instead, could you specify whether you made it by yourself (and released under GFDL) or obtained from somewhere, so I could make a PNG version with the same license? Thanks. Mysid (talk) 10:11, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

I made it myself
I've replaced the image with Image:Uncial alphabet.png. The original has been listed for deletion. Hope this is OK. Mysid (talk) 06:58, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging Image:OghamStone.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:OghamStone.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{gfdl}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairuse}}. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by going to "Your contributions" from your user page and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks so much. --Snout (rummage) 19:35, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Limnognathiamaerski.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Knievel2.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Knievel2.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Do you have a source for the origins of the Triple Crown being James I / VI's title? I was doing some research for the article on an unrelated issue and came across the the statement that nobody knows what the origins are and that it may have been the invention of a journalist. I have altered the statement to say that the name 'may come from the Triple Crown of James I / VI' and unless there is a source that says different I think a discussion of different theories might be in order.GordyB 10:39, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 1002 etc.

Hi, I see you've created a few articles for numbers after 1001 (number). The standard practice for such non-notable numbers is to merge and redirect them to a rounded version; I've done so with 1000 (number). Feel free to recreate one of them if you think of something extraordinary to say! Melchoir 02:04, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Keanecrest.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:Keanecrest.JPG. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BigDT 01:56, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tasmanian Aborigines

What were your sources for your edit of Tasmanian Aborigines? It completly contradicts what Jared Diamond wrote about Tasmania in Guns, Germs, and Steel. He claimed, that by the time the European arrived, the Tasmanian Aborigines had forgotten how to fish. The German wikipedia makes the same claim. Secular mind 19:46, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi, some time ago you added a wonderfully evocative poem to Provinces of Ireland. However the reference you added ([1]) doesn't work for me (I get: "Your search - cache:Ovq8hPXwpJUJ:forum.skadi.net/archive/index.php/t-3737.html ficheall - did not match any documents.") - I suspect it is a link to a temporary cache of search results. [edit] Unspecified source for Image:Irelandsign.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Irelandsign.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 23:10, 8 April 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 23:10, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free image (Image:Thepanel.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Thepanel.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

[edit] Spam in AllAfrica.com

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on AllAfrica.com, by Koavf, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because AllAfrica.com is blatant advertising for a company, product, group, service or person that would require a substantial rewrite in order to become an encyclopedia article.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting AllAfrica.com, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate AllAfrica.com itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 00:46, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Tipperary-crest.gif

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:21demands.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:21demands.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Videmus Omnia Talk 19:59, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:7thdwarf.JPG

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:7thdwarf.JPG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

The Tudors were of partial Welsh ancestry, and in 1536 Wales was fully incorporated into the English state (having been under English control since 1284). With Henry VIII's break from the Roman Catholic Church the monarch became the Supreme Head of the Church of England. Elizabeth I's title became the Supreme Governor of the Church of England.

[edit] House of Stuart

Following the death of Elizabeth I in 1603 without issue, the Scottish king, James VI, succeeded to the English throne as James I in what became known as the Union of the Crowns. In 1604 he adopted the title King of Great Britain, although the two kingdoms remained separate.

[edit] Commonwealth

There was no reigning monarch between the execution of Charles I in 1649 and the Restoration of Charles II in 1660. Despite this, from 1653 the following individuals held power as Lords Protector, during the period known as the Protectorate.

[edit] Pronunciation of Daingean

Hi Eamonn. Where did you get the pronunciation of Daingean, /dæŋən/, from? I feel that the use of ŋ is not enough to get across the "g" sound. Locally, people pronounce Daingean as two separate syllables with the second syllable begining with a g sound. If I were to write this phonetically using the English alphabet it would be Dang-gan. Ga2re2t (talk) 19:55, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

I thought it was the same as the Irish. I've added a "g" to it. EamonnPKeane (talk) 21:07, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Cheers. After I wrote my comment to you I remembered that I have heard Daingean been pronounced as /dæŋən/ by Irish speakers. I imagine that this is the way Daingean is pronounced for the people of Dingle (Daingean Ui Chuis). Ga2re2t (talk) 15:46, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

I really have no opinion on this edit to Time Person of the Year, but I have a comment on the edit summary. For future reference, female is a noun and the previous version was correct. It could be either the first woman or female chosen.

It is also an adjective though. Cheers, Reywas92Talk 16:24, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Malin to Mizen

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Malin to Mizen, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. I see you've added some comments on Hiberno-English at IPA chart for English. If you can do that for all sounds, that would be a valuable contribution. You could use the vowel column left for South Africa. However, merely adding comments piecemeal will make a mess out of the article.
