Eagle's minimal essential medium
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eagle's minimal essential medium (EMEM) is a cell culture medium by Harry Eagle that can be used to maintain cells in tissue culture.
It contains:
- amino acids
- salts (potassium chloride, magnesium sulfate, sodium chloride, and sodium dihydrogen phosphate)
- glucose
- vitamins (folic acid, nicotinamide, riboflavin, B-12)
A variation of this EMEM, called DMEM, (Dulbecco/Vogt modified Eagle's minimal essential medium), which contains approximately four times as much of the vitamins and amino acids present in the original formula and two to four times as much glucose. Additionally, it contains iron. DMEM is suitable for most types of cells, including human, monkey, hamster, rat, mouse and chicken cells. A full list of its components can be found here.
