[edit] Plot

Mulder and Scully receive information from Deep Throat about a UFO that was shot down over Iraq and has been secretly transported to the U.S. However, Deep Throat then intentionally misleads the agents to prevent them from discovering the truth.

[edit] Production details

  • Origin Of Idea: An episode for the fans who wanted more backstory on Deep Throat. Or, how Glen Morgan puts it, "I think it would be really cool if he admitted he had killed an alien." The whole thing was written to get to the line 'A lie is most convincingly hidden between two truths'.

[edit] Trivia

  • "E.B.E." stands for "Extraterrestrial Biological Entity"
  • This episode marks the first appearance of The Lone Gunmen. They originated from a UFO convention that Glen Morgan and Marilyn Osborn [who wrote Shapes and some Space: A&B eps] saw at the airport. ".. three guys behind a table, one in a suit and tie, one in a really crummy t-shirt with long hair. They didn't seem to connect, and then they literally started ripping up people's $20 bills! They were the scariest guys."
  • When Mulder and Scully try to get into the Mattawa, WA "power plant" they use fake names: Val Stefoff and Tom Braidwood (aka Frohike) - both first assistant directors.
  • M&W's episode "Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man" links to parts of this episode - for example, Deep Throat mentions he was one of the few to kill an E.B.E, which is later shown in "Musings".
