Talk:DVONN
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While I added a fair bit of strategy to the article, I'm far from a Dvonn expert. If any strong player stumbles upon this article, they are heartily welcomed to improve it.

Could anyone provide information about the complexity of Dvonn? (compared to Chess or Go, for example). I am curious as to whether a human can surpass a computer opponent. I don't know if such information could be included in the article, but I only know of Dvonn through Wikipedia, so I thought I'd ask here. ACR01 23:56, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

Does anyone know how to correclty pronounce "Dvonn"? I purchased it online and everyone who plays is interested in what the game is called.
I added some text to the stategy section regarding my views on playing strategy (I consider myself to be one of the top 10 players in the world, playing online a lot at both LittleGolem and Brettspielwelt). I managed to win the last real-life world championship that was organized in 2004. I will try to think of some better 'general rules', but the thing is that I myself mostly play by feeling.
With respect to computer programs playing Dvonn, there is one well developed program written by a very strong Reversi player (Jan de Graaf). Unfortunately, this program is not openly available. In the endphase it is unbeatable (since it simply calculates all possible moves), however, as a whole it would be about just as good as any of the top 10 players. The only way to beat it is to agressively go for a cut off early in the game and establish an advantage. Two other programs exist, but they are less developed and less strong. With a few more years and some more computing power, computer programs playing Dvonn will be unbeatable I think.
The picture on the Dvonn page is nice, however, it is clearly not of a game in play but just of some stones put on the board to take a picture (it has a hole surrounded by stones, this is not possible). Unfortunately, I don't know how to edit the box in the top right of the screen. (I also would want to put the current publisher of the game there (http://www.smart.be//en/products/puzzles-games/projectgipf) as Don en Co transferred the publishing rights of the game to Smart)

I would like to know what I will need to do to move the game from start to B-class. I think by now it is having the elements it needs to get there. If it needs more, please let me know so I can add what is needed. I also would like to get rid of the "original research" tag if possible. I added a link to a good strategy guideline that I contributed to develop. Is this enough ? I am not aware of any other good strategy guides. Would it be necessary for me to write one and put that online elsewhere to get rid of the tag ? Xandern 09:13, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
