Talk:Dutch oven (disambiguation)

ok, that's not how you create a disambuation page. I'll figure out how to fix this.FiveRings 23:59, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Removed material

The following material has been removed, as not compatible with WP:NOT and WP:MOSDAB. Disambiguation pages are lists of links to articles, and should not provide any information themselves other than that needed to guide the reader to the correct article. In particular, mere dictionary definitions are not acceptable, nor are entries for things like restaurants that are not notable enough to have their own Wikipedia article. I have moved the dictionary definitions to Wiktionary.--Srleffler 01:01, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

  • The term "Dutch Oven" also refers to the very end of a blunt rolled with a Dutch Masters cigar that contains no more marijuana and is smoked only for the THC residue or resin. This practice is said to originate in New Brunswick, New Jersey.[1].
  • The term "Dutch Oven" also refers to a room full of marijuana smoke.
  • One may exclaim "Dutch oven!" after farting in bed and pulling the bedclothes over their bed-mate's head.
  • "The Dutch Oven" was a restaurant of long standing in the Downtown of Seattle, Washington, now since closed.

[edit] it needs to go somewhere

If alternate definitions are removed completely, folks are going to be perpetually adding the fart definition to the cookware page (I've already removed one of those). It's got to go somewhere.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by FiveRings (talkcontribs) 19:53, August 30, 2006.

It goes to Wiktionary. --Srleffler 01:03, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fart definition removed once again

second time in a week. FiveRings 15:39, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

I added an edit comment. Maybe that will help. On the other hand, the anon who added it vandalized five other pages that day, so probably not.--Srleffler 05:06, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
I suspect the only way vandals will stop adding it to the page is when someone actually writes an encyclopedia article about the fart joke (including regional variations, where and when it originated, appropriate audiences, perhaps a diagram, and the all-important “uses in popular culture” section), at which point it would no longer be considered vandalism. See that, you vandals? You can become legitimate contributors! --Rob Kennedy 07:23, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Well that's what I was trying to inspire with the disambig page. I still agree with the theory, even if it wasn't the perfect execution.FiveRings 13:23, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] coupler

I've added this in. While it might seem like its just a definition (I've added it to Wiktionary as well), I've added it to link to the coupling (railway) article. I arrived here looking for that usage. Thryduulf 02:47, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] What is going on here? .... Farts under the covers in bed

I am almost entirely sure that a "dutch oven" (in addition to being a stewing pot) is also a sexual act. Why is it removed consistently?? - Abscissa 02:42, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

If you want to write an encyclopedic article about it, go ahead. (I’ve outlined above what such an encyclopedia article should include.) Until you do, there’s nowhere for the disambiguation page to link to, except for Wiktionary, which already has the fart definition. I’ve never seen it described as a sexual act, though. --Rob Kennedy 05:45, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
I see you’ve added a link to Common phrases based on stereotypes. So, what’s the stereotype? I asked the same thing on that talk page back in August and got no response. --Rob Kennedy 21:27, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
Citation needed!? Good grief! Excuse me while I look on JSTOR for an authoritative source on the dutch oven. -Rolypolyman 21:29, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Removed marajuana and fart defns.

Ok, we've been here before. If the fart defn and the pot defn are removed, people will be perpetually adding them to the cookware page. Yes, there aren't entire articles on these definitions, but lots of other disambiguation links go to paragraphs within a larger page ("strainer" links to an article on river rafting, for example). If the fart page or the practical jokes page doesn't already have a mention of dutch oven, that can be easily fixed. FiveRings 17:50, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

This is likely a problem with other disambiguation pages. While I am still newbie with Wikipedia contributions, I expect there'd be some guideline on how and when Wikipedia entries should be generated with respect to Wiktionary entries. For example, I don't expect there to be a Wikipedia article for each Wiktionary definition.
But, given that there is no Wikipedia article on the practical joke (etc.), but that Wiktionary covers it in the definition, it seems that the disambiguation pages, in general, should take care of this. In this case, the Wiktionary banner link is off to the side and, to me, is easily dismissed as decorative fluff or advertisement. The general disambiguation format should consider moving related Wikimedia project banner links to be directly under and in line with the other Wikipedia articles. Else, for special cases where the alternate definitions need to be more prominent, then we should make one of the disambiguation bullet points link directly to the Wiktionary definition. --Anonyhole (talk) 23:19, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
