[edit] History

The Dusit Thani Group was founded in 1949 by Than Phu Ying Chanut Piyaoui, who opened the Princess Hotel on New Road in Bangkok. The company opened its flagship hotel, the Dusit Thani Hotel, in Bang Rak district, Bangkok in 1970. It acquired its first resort-style property in 1987 when it renovated a hotel in Pattaya and renamed it the Dusit Resort Pattaya. Other resorts followed, including the Dusit Resort Hua Hin in 1989. The company branched out to Northern Thailand in 1991, opening hotels in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.

Boom years in the 1990s led the Dusit Thani Group to overseas investment in the Melrose Investment Partnership, which acquired the Melrose Hotel in Dallas, Texas. Those shares were subsequently sold. The chain entered Indonesia in 1994, opening hotels in Balikpapan and Jakarta. The company also acquired the Kempinski group of hotels and was responsible for managing all the Germany hotelier's properties. But with the East Asian financial crisis, the Dusit Thani Group sold its shares in those ventures.

In 1995, the Dusit Thani Group acquired the Hotel Nikko Manila, which it still owns. The group entered the Middle East in 2001, opening the Dusit Dubai. [3]

The Dusit Thani Group is publicly traded on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (DTC), with 10.28% of the company's shares owned by Pioneer Global Group. [4]
