Duryea, Pennsylvania

Duryea is a borough in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, nine miles (14 km) south of Scranton on the Lackawanna River. Duryea was incorporated as a borough in 1901. Coal mining and the manufacture of silk were the chief industries in the early years of its existence. The population numbered 7,487 in 1910, and 8,275 in 1940. The population was 4,634 at the 2000 census.

(41.347729, -75.758302)According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 5.7 square miles (14.8 km²), of which, 5.5 square miles (14.3 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²) of it (3.84%) is water. The borough is served by the Pittston Area School District.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 4,634 people, 1,984 households, and 1,297 families residing in the borough. The population density was 841.0 people per square mile (324.7/km²). There were 2,151 housing units at an average density of 390.4/sq mi (150.7/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.86% White, 0.26% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.35% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.30% of the population.
There were 1,984 households out of which 24.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% were married couples living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% were non-families. 32.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the borough the population was spread out with 19.1% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.4 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $32,207, and the median income for a family was $41,775. Males had a median income of $32,715 versus $25,786 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,598. About 6.3% of families and 8.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.6% of those under age 18 and 15.9% of those age 65 or over.
