Durham Tigers
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Durham Tigers are a small rugby league side based in Bishop Auckland just outside Durham in England.
The team originally played in the city of Durham itself in the meadowfield/Brandon area. The team under the guidance of Steve Rich became at the heart of rugby league in the North East. Steve Rich arguably did more for rugby league and more importantly for turning young people on to playing the game he loved in the soccer obsessed area of the UK than any one elese at the time.
The clubs most famous old boy and Steve's son Patrick Rich went on to play professionally for Keighley cougars, Oldham Roughyeds and later London Skolars and Sheffield Eagles
They compete in the Rugby League Conference at senior level and in the CMS Yorkshire league at under-15 level. The club also runs an under 14 and an under 12 team they also have an under-16 playing in the North East Competition. During the 1990s the junior sides dominated the north east leagues winning the league and/or league cup on several occasions including u17s winning the double in 1996
Durham Tigers are a developing team in the North East, rapidly becoming more and more established with the help of people such as John Coutes in the senior squad and other coaches such as Jonny Wright and Rob Aspen (and others in the junior squads).
