Duplicaria tristis is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Terebridae, the auger snails.

This species is endemic to New Zealand.

This auger is found in fine sand down to depths of 70 m.

The shell is small, slender, subulate, with regular arcuate axial ribs.

The shell coloration is chocolate, with a pale yellow spiral band just above the suture. Dredged shells are often pinkish-buff above but reddish-brown on the base.

The shell height is up to 22 mm, and the maximum width is 7.5 mm.
