[edit] Summary

Oil on canvas. Shows the future baron on the Grand Tour, with the Castel Sant'Angelo and St. Peter's Basilica in the background. The ancient Roman altar on which he leans is fictional, with a relief based on the sculptural group Orestes and Electra.

The painting was produced in Rome whilst its subject was there but, in being shipped back from there to England on board the British frigate HMS Westmoreland, it was seized by the French. It was later sold by them to Charles III of Spain, and is now in the Prado. From February to May 2008 it is on loan to the National Gallery, London for their Batoni exhibition.
