330mm shell for French battleships Dunkerque and Strasbourg. Taken by me in September 2006 at the French Army Museum at Les Invalides. Translation of the text of the plaque: 'This 330mm shell corresponds to the principal armament of the French battlecruisers Dunkerque and Strasbourg, characterized by the grouping of the main armament (in two quadruple turrets) on the foredeck. On the 3rd of July 1940, the Strasbourg carried out a spectacular sortie from the road of Mers-el-Kébir and succeeded in reaching the port of Toulon in spite of an attack by British torpedo bombers from the aircraft carrier Ark Royal. The Dunkerque was severely damaged. The two ships were scuttled at Toulon on the 27th of November, 1942.
