Dunoon is a small village near the City of Lismore in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia. It had a population of 398 in 2001, including 9 indigenous people (2.3%) and 34 foreign born people (8.6%). It is the Macadamia nut capital of Australia.
On October 26 2007, a weak tornado struck Dunoon (mainly the southern part of the village), and it was captured on video as it struck a direct hit on an electrical transformer station. The tornado also destroyed 2 houses, severely damaged a church and two demountables at a school, with other houses in the village also damaged.
Like the other small villages dotted along the ridges in the hills heading north out of Lismore, it is a quiet town. There is a postoffice (the social hub of town), a doctor's surgery, a mechanic, a small food store and a second-hand goods store. Whilst Dunoon has a handful of churches and a community hall, most community gatherings occur at the sports club. The popular sports are cricket and soccer, and being on the field doesn't seem to hinder some of the locals' desire to drink or smoke.
Dunoon is currently predominantly a unilinear development, but with 2 major land releases is set to expand off the main ridge. The combined size of the 2 releases is projected to have a large social impact on the town, with the community rallying against the council in an effort to limit it's scale.
