Dunja Vejzovic

Dunja Vejzovic (Vejzovič), born in Zagreb, Croatia, on October 20, 1943, is an acclaimed operatic soprano who began her career (as a mezzo-soprano) with the Zagreb National Theatre. Following further studies in Stuttgart, she was engaged by the Nürnberg Opera, where she appeared as Carmen, Venus (in Tannhäuser), Azucena (Il trovatore), Amneris (Aïda) and Dalila (Samson et Dalila). Her international career began in 1978, at the Bayreuth Festival, where she enacted Kundry, in Parsifal, for three summers. On October 9, 1978, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut, as Venus, opposite Jess Thomas in the name part.
In 1980 and 1981, Herbert von Karajan engaged her to appear in his Salzburg Festival Parsifal, which was reckoned a great success. In 1984, she sang Ortrud, in Lohengrin, for that Festival. Another of her great collaborations has been with the director Robert Wilson, with whom she sang the title role of Alceste, and in Parsifal.
At the Teatro alla Scala, Vejzovic appeared as the Zia Principessa in Suor Angelica, Didon in Les troyens, and Venus. Also in her répertoire are the title role in Hérodiade (opposite Montserrat Caballé and José Carreras), Abigaille in Nabucco, Odabella in Attila, Eboli in Don Carlos, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Marie in Wozzeck, and the sole character in Erwartung.
