From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Duloch (or Duloch Park) is a mainly residential suburb of the Royal Burgh of Dunfermline, in Fife, Scotland. Duloch and the surrounding area is a dormitory suburb of Edinburgh - and it has close commuting links to Edinburgh and surrounding areas of Fife via the M90.
The closest railway stations are Rosyth, Dunfermline Queen Margaret, Dunfermline Town and Inverkeithing.
Local amenities include a large supermarket, a leisure park 'Fife Leisure Park' which contains a cinema and several restaurants, a district park with community woodland (Calais Muir Wood), a library and community hall. There are two primary schools, Masterton Primary School, and The Duloch Schools.[1]
[edit] History
Historically Duloch was spelled Dow Loch, as can be seen in the Blaeu Atlas of Scotland, made in 1654 by Joan Blaeu (1596-1673),[2] and the Roy Military Survey, 1747-1755.[3]. Duloch comes form the Scottish Gaelic 'Dubh Loch' meaning Black water - marshland prone to flooding. This is one reason for the large number of suds ponds in the area. Historic buildings include the grade A listed Old Duloch House, which sits to the immediate south east of the modern suburb, described as, "an ancient mansion; also a modern house, the occasional residence of its proprietor; and on a promontory near St. Margaret's Hope."[4], to the south is Pitreavie Castle and doocot and to the east Fordell Castle.
