Duke Xian of Jin (晋献公) was known as cold-blooded king in that period. When he first came to the power, he used some suggestions from his officials and removed his political enemies and killed many people. Later he conquered three small countries which were called Geng (耿), Huo (霍) and Wei (魏). He also gave Geng and Wei to his officials Zhao Su (赵夙) and Bi Wan (毕万), which bedded the seed of separating Jin into three parts later on. Shortly after, he also conquered Guo (虢) and Yu(虞). By this time, geographically, Jin became the biggest country in Spring and Autumn period.

His father's concubine - Qi Jiang (齐姜),two children from her: Bo Ji (伯姬)- married to Duke Mu of Qin (秦穆公), Shen Sheng(申生) 3. Two sisters from Rong(戎)- one son after each of them: Chong Er(重耳) and Yi Wu (夷吾) 4. Two sisters from Li Rong (骊戎)- one son after each of them: Xi Qi(奚齐) and Zhuo zi (卓子)
