[edit] Biography
Georg Borwin was born in Freiburg the only son of Duke Georg Alexander of Mecklenburg and Archduchess Ilona of Austria (born 1927). He is a male line descendant of Georg, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and through his mother a descendant of King Frederick Augustus III of Saxony and Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria.
In 1928 his grandfather Georg was adopted by his uncle and the head of the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Duke Charles Michael of Mecklenburg. His grandfather subsequently assumed the title of Duke of Mecklenburg which was confirmed by the head of the Imperial of Russia, Grand Duke Cyril Vladimirovich on 18 July 1929 and then recognised on 23 December by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.[1] On 18 December 1950, Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich Franz of Mecklenburg-Schwerin confirmed the title and also granted the style Highness, which in conjunction with the title, is the style enjoyed by all members of the House of Mecklenburg.[2]
Duke Georg Borwin succeeded as head of the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz following his father's death on 26 January 1996.[3] With the death of Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich Franz on the 31 July 2001, the House of Mecklenburg-Schwerin has become extinct in the male line leaving Mecklenburg-Strelitz as the only surviving branch of the Grand Ducal house in the male line.
Along with being a former serving officer in the German Army, Georg Borwin has studied Viticulture and managed a Swiss drinks company.[3] In politics, he is the Christian Democratic Union's local party chairman for Hinterzarten in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. He is also the grand master of the dynastic house order of the Wendisch Crown[4] and the patron and protector of the Order of the Griffin which was re-established in 1984.[5] In 2005 Georg Borwin with the head of House of Hohenzollern, Prince Georg Friedrich of Prussia appeared at an event to remember Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz who married into the House of Hohenzollern and became Queen of Prussia.[6] He has also served as a member of the Almanach de Gotha's Comité de Patronage.[7]

Duke Georg Borwin married Alice Wagner (born 2 August 1959 in Hinterzarten) the daughter of Dr Jürgen Wagner and Marianne Bichl in a civil marriage on December 24, 1985 at Hinterzarten followed by a religious ceremony on July 19, 1986. They have three children.[2]
