Dugmaia, means "whose mother is of questionable character". Its root "Dug" or "Dog" is etymologically a short form of "Dogla" or "Dag" meaning bad impression.
The people in this subcaste are purported to be successors of the Horse-riders (Ashwarohi) who during the Mughal period had affairs with these women "of questionable character".
