In the early 1970s at a time when there was no mosque in Dublin the Muslim students began to contact their relatives, Islamic organizations in the U.K. and some Muslim countries with the purpose of raising funds to establish a mosque in Dublin. In 1974 a four storey house was bought, and in 1976 the first mosque and Islamic centre was opened. A few years after its establishment, the mosque became too small to accommodate the increasing numbers of worshippers. Thus, in 1983 the building of the current Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland on South Circular Road was bought and converted into a mosque.
