Dublin-Belfast corridor

The Dublin-Belfast corridor[citation needed] basically consists of the area between the four cities of Dublin, Belfast, Lisburn and Newry located on the eastern seaboard of Ireland with a population of 3 million people and a population density of 229/km²[citation needed]

This region is the most heavily populated on the island.[citation needed] Dublin is the capital city of the Republic of Ireland while Belfast is the capital city of Northern Ireland.

The distance between both cities is 160km (100mi) the equivalent of a 2-hour car journey.

The main economic engines of the region are Greater Dublin and Greater Belfast. Greater Dublin produces approximately 70 billion euro (2006) while Greater Belfast produces 11.5bn(14.5bn euro) sterling (2005).

The total wealth produced in these two city regions is 84.5bn euro(67bn sterling) making it second only to London in Ireland and Britain.

The M1 motorway links the two cities which is called M1 motorway (Republic of Ireland) and M1 motorway (Northern Ireland).

There is also the Enterprise (train) service connecting the two city regions.

There are three major airports; Dublin airport (23 million passengers (2007)), Belfast International Airport (5 million passengers(2007)) and Belfast City Airport (2 million passengers (2007)) which together deal with 30 million passengers each year.


Dublin

The city is served by the Dublin Suburban Rail network, Dublin Bus network, Luas tram network, Dublin Area Rapid Transit and the planned Metro North and Metro West.


Belfast

The city is served by the Belfast Suburban Rail network and Metro (Belfast) bus service.
