From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dubăsari sub-district (Romanian; Russian: Dubossary) is an administrative sub-district in Transnistria, Moldova. The population of its seat, Dubăsari, was at 34,000 in 1989. The current population is estimated at around half that number. Its geographical location is 47°16′N, 29°09′E. The name of the town is derived from the word "dubas", which means a boat.

The sub-district consists of the city Dubăsari, and 9 communes: Comisarovca Nouă, Crasnâi Vinogradari, Doibani I, Dubău, Dzerjinscoe, Goian, Harmaţca, Lunga, and Ţâbuleuca

Unlike other cities in Transnistria, Dubăsari is a city with a Romanian population exceeding 50%, while Ukrainians and Russians represent large minorities. According to the 2004 Transnistrian census, ethnic Moldavians were 68.6% of the sub-district's population, 17.1% were Ukrainian, and 12.3% Russian, while 2.0% belonged to other ethnic groups.

In 1990-1991, the city and the surrounding area were occasionally the scene of incidents, which aimed to establish in Transnistria a government that would break away from Moldova. In the 1992 War of Transnistria the city and the surrounding area were, along with Bendery (also known as Tighina or Bender), the scene of the fighting in that war.
