Hi there! Just for your information, I am not Duane Otani. I'm just a grade school student who wrote an article about this person.

[TEST ARTICLE]

Duane Otani is the current music director of a band in Aliso Niguel High School, which is located in the city of Aliso Viejo, California. He became the director since the 2006-2007 school year, and he still retains his position to the present day. He was also the former music director of the Buchanan High School band in Fresno, California.

[edit] Timeline

[edit] Early music life

Otani spent his childhood in the district of Kula, Hawaii. At that time, he started his music career and was truly motivated to become an inspirational music teacher. He played the trumpet and attended Maui High School from 9th-12th grade. His high school band teacher was Clyde Uyehara.[1]

[edit] Music career

In high school, Otani has gained drum major status in the school's marching band for three years. After he graduated high school, Otani attended Fresno State University in California for his college. He became the graduate assistant director in the Fresno State Bulldog Marching Band. After he graduated Fresno State with a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree, he became a music director of Clovis East High School. He later then moved to Orange County in southern California, where he directs the band of Aliso Niguel High School.

[edit] Classes

In Aliso Niguel High School, Otani currently teaches the following music classes as follows: Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz Band[2], and Drumline during school periods, which are zero, first and fifth, third, and seventh respectively.

[edit] Exchange concert

On April 28, 2007, Otani hosted an exchange concert at Aliso Niguel High School with Clyde Uyehara's band from Samuel Enoka Kalama Intermediate School (or colloquially known as Kalama Intermediate School). There are many notable reasons that this exchange concert was hosted.

  • This event can allow Otani to reacquaint with Uyehara, his music teacher from high school back in Hawaii. Uyehara has changed Otani's life and further motivated him into pursuing his dream career.
  • It lets both their band students have fun while doing their pen-pal communications before they finally got to meet each other in person. They get to share to each other about their cultures and differences between California and Hawaii. They also get to spend time talking to their pen-pals during their lunchtime.
  • This was made to be Uyehara's most special event because the 2006-2007 school year will be his last year of teaching. He will retire after this school year at the age of 55.
  • This concert will bring joy to everyone who participates this event, including the students, teachers, and the whole entire audience.

  1. ^ At some point after Otani graduated high school, Uyehara transferred into another school (from Maui High School to Kalama Intermediate School). However, there was no known date for when this occurred.
  2. ^ Jazz band can also be called the big band. Otani hosts a big band consisting of only saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and a rhythm section. His band does not have any bass trombones or euphoniums (baritones) unlike most regular jazz bands.
