[edit] Plot
Adalberto Rangel, a child nicknamed Juvenaldo, lived with his poor father and siblings in a favela. With no means of sustaining the family, the father sold his son to a thief, Hermógenes Rangel. Juvenaldo then leaves home with his new criminal tutor. Some years later, and Adalberto (now an adult) decides to make his own fortune without depending on his mentor. He steals all of all Hermógenes' money, and flees.
During the escape, a serious car accident occurs, killing a couple Waldemar and Gabriela . Whilst searching the dead couples car, Adalberto discovers a suitcase containing money, pictures and personal effects of a young girl. He proceeds then to the fictitious city of Passaredo (adapted in São Bento do Sul, Santa Catarina) to meet the now orphaned, Maria Paula . According to Adalberto, Gabriela asked, before dying, that he take care of his daughter.
The heiress's friends - her governess & her daugher, Jandira & Luciana and their lawyer, Dr. Claudius (who is commissioned privately by Maria Paula) - try to alert her, but the thief is fast and, even on the day of Maria Paula's parents' wake, she is swept off her feet by the conman. Within no time Adalberto asks Maria Paula to marry him and the wedding goes ahead. Not long after her wedding to Adalberto, Maria Paula discovers that her husband has disappeared, taking all their goods and leaving her in utter poverty. The conman, changes everything about his life including his name, home (in Rio de Janeiro) and lifestyle. He even has plastic surgery to change his face. Thr only person he shares his secret with is Bárbara Carreira - a prostitute with whom he lost his virginity to. Adalberto, or Dr. Marconi Ferraço , as he becomes, makes his name as a respectable entrepreneur of construction.
Some years later, by coincidence Maria Paula decides to relocate to a favela named Portelinha in Rio de Janeiro. Maria Paula sees a news report about Ferraço, but recognises him as her husband. She eventually manages to track him down. With a new identity and a lot of money in his pocket, Ferraço decides to conquer the beautiful Sílvia . Sílvia falls in love with the man she knows as Ferraço and accepts his offer of marriage. At the engagement party of , Maria Paula makes a big scene. But, even so, SIlvia remains engage to him, and he becomes her first great love. Sílvia and Maria Paula dispute Marconi Ferraço's love. However, at first it remains unknown whether Maria paula is really interested in Ferraco's love or just in her revenge.
João Pedro , and Branca together were the parents Sílvia. Branca, discovers on the following day of João Pedro's death, that he had continued an extra-marital affair for over twenty years with Célia Mara . João Pedro met Célia Mara before marrying with the powerful Branca and was like "a lover with a wifes face". Branca assumes the presidency of the Universidade Pessoa de Moraes , replacing her deceased husband, and transforms it in an institution of absolute excellence. In certain moment, it is inconvenienced with the approach among the teacher Francisco Macieira and Célia Mara, which starts to study in her university.
Branca is the sister of the lawyer Paulo Barreto (Barretão) , A strong supporter of rights. He is married with Gioconda , a great lady of the carioca society, yet has a habit of acting sometimes snobishly and gossiping. The two are parents of Júlia , an very intelligent and active girl, who fell in love with Evilásio Caó , a black man from the favela Portelinha raising prejudices in the family in both race and class.
The favela Portelinha , is a place that was created from the determination of Juvenal Antena , A born leader, smart and compassionate. Juvenal was the boss of a builders union, the GPN , who brought workers from the Northeast. They heard the false promise that they would receive their fees from the failed company and thus rioted at the injustice. Juvenal resigned his position and joined the workers in the fight for their rights. He dreamt of joining those families without a home and creating a community. For the dream to become reality is a long leap of the imagination, yet Juvenal meets with other demonstrators respected by the group: the mother-of-saint Lady Setembrina , the evangelical shepherd Inácio Lisboa , the carpenter Misael Caó ( the father of Evilásio) and a van owner Geraldo Peixeiro . With the help of the secretary of State of Social Service Narciso Tellerman (the future deputy), Juvenal organizes an invasion of the land owned by the GPN. Lead by Juvenal and his gift for words they successfully take over the land they deserved, where over many years grew up the community of their dreams: the favela of Portelinha, a place where his people will never go without, where no there are drugs nor violence.
However, Marconi Ferraço bought the land of GPN, and he will enter in a judicial and moral battle against Juvenal Antena.
However, in the last few chapters of the story, an alliance between Ferraco and Juvenal is stroked. Moreover, Ferraco aids juvenal in his postulation agains His Godson. In return, Juvenal not only partially changes some of the ideas he had relating Ferraco, but also advises Maria Paula to marry Ferraco to recover her money, and for the sake of hers and Ferraco's son: Renato, who adores his father. Renato does not know the dark past of his father. Silvia knowing this, arranges a file that she later sends to the boy with all the facts related to the con Ferraco arrange for Maria Paula. Silvia hopes to separate the couple(Ferraco and maria paula)but in the process she starts to loose her mind completely. In the final episode of the soup, Silvia kidnaps Renato, after escaping a mental hospital where she was locked up, after trying to kill Maria Paula and firing against Ferraco instead. She escapes Police without being able to kill Renato, and while she is fleeing she is hit by a car being driven by a handsome millonaire who takes her to live in Paris with him. She contacts her acomplice Joao Batista who goes to Paris to work as her driver. Ferraco confesses his crimes as part of the pre-nup he sign in order to get Maria Paula marry him again, so he goes to jail for 2 years, saying to Maria Paula that the only thing he hopes in exchange of his change of ways, is to have her and their son waiting for him when he gets out of jail. Two years later he gets out and finds that Maria Paula stole all his money and went away with Renato. When he is sitting on a beach, asking himself why would she do that to him after all the proofs he gave of his love for her, he receives a phone call of a private number. Is Maria Paula. She asks him what does it feel to be betrayed, he answers that he never would have believe that of her. She interrupts him and says to him:"Go to your old office building, there is a plane ticket on your name there, take the first plane and hurry, because our son and I are waiting for you" Ferraco arrives to a beautiful island, finds Renato walking on the beach, runs up to him and hugs him with loving care. Then, he sees Maria Paula, and asks her what would happen now between the two. She answers:" Now we are even, stop wasting time and kiss me, you idiot" Ferraco smiles and kisses her passionately and the words "The End" appear as the scene fates and the soup ends.
