Dual Occupancy refers to the ownership of a plot of land that has been zoned for the erection a building with a secondary suite, also know as accessory suites. The building may consist of any of the following secondary suites. Other terms refer to this suite as a “Granny Flat” “Mother-in-law House” “Mother-in-Law Apartment”.
- A suite above a rear detached garage,
- A suite above the main floor of a single-detached dwelling,
- A suite below the main floor of a single-detached dwelling (a "basement suite").
- A suite attached to a single-detached dwelling at grade, or
- A suite detached from the principal dwelling (a "garden suite" or "guesthouse").

Most cites and states do not allow construction of secondary suites as it does not comply with their specific zoning laws or land usage. Some areas allow the building of a secondary suites but do not allow the suites to be rented out but only to be lived in by a relative or guest. The secondary suite can be attached or completely detached from the primary leaving quarters. This suite normally consists of its own separate entrance along with a kitchen bathroom and living area.

Canada provides financial support for there inhabitants. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation is one of the orginizations provideing support.
