Dry measure is used for pourable solids, since capacity is made by bulk comparison in a marked container. As scales became more common, reliable and convenient, dry measure became replaced by weight, but the standard denominations still remain.
For example, for Oats, in Norway, Finland and Netherlands, the hectolitre = 50 kg, for rye, 72 kg, for wheat, 77 or 79 kg, these use the hectolitre as weight as the bushel is in English cuntries.
