Drummer Hoff is the title and main character of a children's book by Barbara and Ed Emberley. Ed Emberley won the 1968 Caldecott Medal for the book's illustrations.[1] Written by Barbara Emberley, it tells a tale of seven soldiers who build a cannon and Drummer Hoff, who fires it off, then the book exploding into a blast of colors.
Parents of young children often refer to this book as "peace themed"[citation needed] because after the cannon is shot, there is an image of a cannon with birds nesting in the barrel, flowers growing around the base and a spider's web on the fuse. This image is preceded by 25 pages of military persons of many ranks coming together to make the cannon shoot. Because of this disparity between pages spent on "war" themes and last 2 pages spent on "peace" theme, it is debatable if either the theme is peace and, if so, if a young child will recognize that peace theme.[citation needed]
