namaskaram!
i am dr.vasudevan from cuddalore. i have just started this page to gain some experience. i shall soon post howto for tamil typing in linux and translation projects.
first the setting for dapper ubuntu. you must have installed tamil language pack at the time of installation. if not get them installed through synaptic. i hope you know how to do that. may be later i make a link here for that.
click on system> admin> language support. you need to give your password as it is a admin change. under supported languages see if tamil is there. if so check the box next to it. it will be enabled.
you had better install kde desktop too if you are in ubuntu not kubuntu. it is better and has more features. if not install at least qtimm from synaptic.
click on system> preferences >SCIM input method setup. expand IMEngine and click on global setup. you must see tamil in the list. enable that. next you want the keyboard setup. click system> preferences >keyboard .click layout tab. click add. expand india> select tamil unicode.
for easier administration you might want to add this to the panel. right click on the top panel >add to panel> from utilities keyboard indicator. now and icon or text appears on the panel indicating the current kbd. clicking on that toggles through all the kbd you have enabled.
that is all for now.
