Driel

Driel is a town of approximately 3250 inhabitants in the municipality of Overbetuwe near Arnhem in the Netherlands. Located approximately 4 km southwest of Arnhem, and on the south side of the Rhine, the countryside surrounding Driel was the drop zone on 21 September 1944 of the Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade which participated in Operation Market Garden under the command of Maj. Gen. Stanislaw Sosabowski.

  • Polish Monument at the 'Polenplein' ('Plac Polski' in Polish). A nearby plaque commemorates the 94 Polish soldiers who fell nearby.
  • Several other plaques along the dike between Heteren, Driel and Arnhem.
